{Product Review} Funky Monkey Natural Freeze Dried Fruit

Funky Monkey freeze dried snacks takes a fun approach that is wholesome, natural, and downright fun to eat. While that may not be their official motto, it is one that I think of when we got the pleasure to dive into them. I found them to be sweet, crunchy, and very convenient as far as portable foods go.

The company sent me an array of flavors, and they arrived just in time for our trip up north. Since they are both a snack food and non-messy, I figured this would be the ideal testing environment. Would they hold up to the summer heat? Could they satisfy antsy kids itching for a sweet snack?

The answer of course was a big Yes. I feared the texture would be off when they met the NJ heatwave that hit only days after our arrival, but they held up well, even when the temperature rose above 100 degrees in the car. Funky Monkey snacks remained fresh in the vacuum sealed packages, and the crunchy texture remained intact.

But the real question moms and dads are sure to ask is whether or not the kids like them. Mine sure did, it made sharing a bit of a battle as the kids swapped packages in the backseat. No flavor was turned down, and both my husband and I had to fight to get a taste.

Between the apple and pineapple flavors, it’s difficult to have a clear sure-fire winner. Each one was unique, and the combination of natural flavors was enticing to the palate. This is why I’d chose the carnival mix as the winner. It gave you a bit of everything, but for me I really enjoyed the acai blend that brought tang and sweetness.

As a mother, and lover of true natural foods, I’d say yes to this sure-to-be future purchase. For starters the company only uses fruit and fruit juices. There is no added salt, preservatives, artificial colorants, and absolutely no added sugar of any kind. Essentially it is a completely portable serving of fruit that is perfect for lunch bags, emergency car kits, camping and/or road trips, and of course for a healthy snack alternative.

While watching my children devour these snacks it also got me to thinking. There are kids (and adults too!) who don’t get enough servings of fruit. I am probably one of them. For example, apples, I can’t stand them fresh, nor cooked into applesauce. It’s a complete texture issue that developed during my second pregnancy that never left. Anywho, I loved the freeze dried apples, and it enabled to be able to enjoy the fruit without having to worry about the texture. So it’s worth a try if you have a picky fruit eater due to texture issues too!

For my vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free readers, I’d like to add that all products that I was sent to try are free of gluten, and animal products. They are also kosher if this is a concern, and the fruits are free of genetically modified ingredients which of course is a major plus for me.

I definitely think Funky Monkey lived up to my expectations, and I’ll be purchasing more for our trip home from NJ. If you’d like to find Funky Monkey Snacks near you check out their website for local stores, or purchase off of amazon.com.
